چکیده

Alkaline peroxide delignification of rye straw has been first investigated in this paper. The results showed that treatment of dewaxed and water-extracted rye straw with 2% H2O2 at pH 11.5 for 12 h at 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, and 70°C resulted in a dissolution of 52.7, 75.7, 81.8, 83.1, 85.8, and 87.8% of the original lignin, and 44.2, 52.5, 70.0, 70.0, 71.3, and 71.9% of the original hemicelluloses, respectively. The isolated pure lignin fractions contained rather low amounts of neutral sugars, 0.4–1.1%, and had weight-average molecular weights between 2420 and 3480 g mol. They contained almost equal amounts of noncondensed guaiacyl and syringyl units with fewer p-hydroxyphenyl units. The b–O–4 ether bonds together with b–b and b–5 carbon–carbon linkages were found to be present in the lignin structural units. Hydroxycinnamic acids such as p-coumaric and ferulic acids appeared to be strongly associated to lignin molecules. Comparison of these lignin samples indicated that the alkaline peroxide treatment of the straw under the conditions given did not affect the overall structure of lignin. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. Cellulose Stability and Delignification after Alkaline Hydrogen Peroxide Treatment of Straw

Neutron diffraction profiles for cellulose from different sources were compared before and after alkaline hydrogen peroxide (AHP) treatment. It was found that AHP treatment did not cause detectable changes in the structure of highly polymerized cellulose. In measurements on wheat straw, peaks were observed at the angles characteristic of pure cellulose. Changes, with AHP treatment, of the inten...

Studies on the mechanism of alkaline peroxide delignification of agricultural residues.

Alkaline solutions of hydrogen peroxide partially delignify wheat straw and other lignocellulosic materials, leaving a cellulosic residue that is highly susceptible to enzymatic digestion by cellulase. The delignification reaction is strongly dependent upon the pH of the reaction mixture, with an optimum at pH 11.5-11.6, pKa for the dissociation H(2)O(2) right harpoon over left harpoon H(+) + H...

The Effect of Delignification Process with Alkaline Peroxide on Lactic Acid Production from Furfural Residues

Furfural residues produced from the furfural industry were investigated as a substrate for lactic acid production by simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF). Alkaline peroxide was used for delignification of furfural residues to improve the final lactic acid concentration. The residue was treated with 1.3% to 1.7% hydrogen peroxide at 80 °C for 1 h with a substrate concentration of...

Nitrogen-Centered Activators of Peroxide-Reinforced Oxygen Delignification

In an effort to augment the efficiency of an oxygen delignification stage, we examined the effectiveness of various heterocyclic aromatic nitrogen compounds as possible activators of such a stage. It was shown that a variety of such compounds may act as activators in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, improving the delignification efficiency of oxygen delignification. Among the group of activat...

Effects of treating wheat straw with pH-regulated solutions of alkaline hydrogen peroxide on nutrient digestion by sheep.

An experiment using a 4 X 4 Latin square design was to determine effects of treating wheat straw with pH-regulated (pH = 11.5) solutions of hydrogen peroxide on site and extent of nutrient digestion in multiple-fistulated sheep. Regulating reaction pH at 11.5 prevented solubilization of some cell wall hemicelluloses, resulting in improved retention of DM. Diets fed to sheep contained 33 or 70% ...
